چکیده

The Web Ontology Language (OWL) provides a modelling paradigm that is especially well suited for developing models of large, structurally complex domains such as those found in Health Care and the Life Sciences. OWL's declarative nature combined with powerful reasoning support has effectively supported the development of very large and complex anatomy, disease, and clinical ontologies. OWL, however, is not a programming language, so using these models in applications necessitates both a technical means of integrating OWL models with programs and considerable methodological sophistication in knowing how to integrate them. In this paper, we present an analytical framework for evaluating various OWL-Java combination approaches. We have developed a framework for supporting what we call hybrid modelling, that is, building models in which part of the model exists and is developed directly in Java and part of the model exists and is developed directly in OWL. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of hybrid modelling both in comparison to other approaches and by means of a case study of a large medical records system.

A Generic Software Framework for Building Hybrid Ontology-Backed Models for Driving Applications

We describe a generic software framework for building dynamic domain-models that can drive both domain-specific and domain-neutral software applications. Models are hybrid. They combine standard ontological representations with extra-ontological representation to provide modes of interaction not fully specifiable within standard ontological formalisms. A core model-building framework has been d...

Hybrid Reasoning with Argumentation Schemes

Practical reasoning typically requires a variety of argumentation schemes to be used together to solve problems and make decisions. For example, a legal case may raise issues requiring argument from precedent cases, rules, policy goals, moral principles, jurisprudential doctrine, social values and evidence. We present an extensible software architecture which allows diverse computational models...

Developing a BIM-based Spatial Ontology for Semantic Querying of 3D Property Information

With the growing dominance of complex and multi-level urban structures, current cadastral systems, which are often developed based on 2D representations, are not capable of providing unambiguous spatial information about urban properties. Therefore, the concept of 3D cadastre is proposed to support 3D digital representation of land and properties and facilitate the communication of legal owners...

Ontology Modeling and Object Modeling in Software Engineering

A data model is a plan for building a database and is comparable to an architect's building plans. There are two major methodologies used to create a data model: the EntityRelationship (ER) approach and the Object Model. This paper will be discussed only the object model approach. The goal of the data model is to certify that all data objects required by the database are completely and accurate...

HOD2MLC: Hybrid Ontology Design and Development Model with Lifecycle

Ontologies have gained increasing usage to augment an application with domain knowledge, particularly in healthcare, where they represent knowledge ranging from: bioinformatics data such as protein, gene, etc. to biomedical informatics such as diseases, diagnosis, symptoms, etc. However, the current ontology development efforts and process are data intensive and construction based, creating ont...
